Heavy rains claim 15 lives in Hebei
FIFTEEN people have died and 19 missing as of 10am this morning in north China's Hebei Province after heavy rain hit the area, the local Civil Affairs Bureau said today.
Around 11,000 tourists and 2,700 villagers were stranded in Laiyuan, Laishui and Yixian counties after the traffic and communication was cut off by the storm. Rescuers dropped disaster relief goods from helicopters in the region this morning. Six tourists who were seriously sick were rescued by helicopters.
Nearly 160,000 people have been relocated, 3,368 houses collapsed and 11,703 were damaged since the downpour hit Hebei over the weekend, China News Service reported today.
Hebei received more than 200 millimeters of rain on average with the worst hit areas seeing 360mm of rain.
