Heavy rains lash Hunan, claim 6 lives
The death toll from the storms and floods in central China鈥檚 Hunan Province rose to six yesterday, as authorities in Beijing initiated a low-level emergency response.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction said they have sent emergency response teams to the province.
As of 10am yesterday, six people had been confirmed dead and three reported missing since the storm broke on Monday, the provincial civil affairs bureau said.
About 1.6 million people have been affected and more than 104,000 relocated, it said, adding that about 8,600 homes have been demolished or badly damaged.
Heavy rain 鈥 which was recorded at almost 26 centimeters in one town 鈥 has been blamed for the worst of the damage.
Provincial authorities have already sent relief materials and 6 million yuan (US$967,600) in funding to disaster-hit regions.
The central government yesterday issued a level-4 emergency response, the lowest possible.
