A MOTHER in a northeastern China city tried everything including an 18-year white lie to keep alive her son's hope that he could one day enter the college of his choice after he became deeply depressed when he was refused admission.
Zhang Zhijiang, the son, received an admission letter on August 8, 1991, but the letter was not from his favorite university as his score was two points too low, Dalian-based Peninsula Morning Post reported on Thursday, saying it was using aliases for the mother and son.
Zhang was 20 then and told his parents he planned to leave home in Liaoning Province's Fuxin City to visit the college of his choice in the provincial capital of Shenyang and argue his case for admission.
Zhang later returned home and his mother surnamed Li learnt he had walked from Fuxin to Shenyang but became depressed when he arrived at the college and walked back.
She always reassured him that there was still hope at his college of choice.
Since then it has been a life of heartbreak for Li, 77, who suffers from a coronary condition, with the death of her husband and the still-depressed Zhang frequently running away.
Mother and son have just been reunited after another of his "disappearing tricks."
