Hebei named most polluted
North China’s Hebei Province suffered the worst air pollution in China last year, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said yesterday.
Of the 10 cities with the most serious problems, seven were in Hebei, including the top three — Baoding, Xingtai and provincial capital Shijiazhuang.
The other four were Tangshan, Handan, Hengshui and Langfang.
The seven cities were also among the top 10 in 2013, when Xingtai, Shijiazhuang and Handan topped the list.
China’s northern region is known for its steel industry, which makes a major economic contribution but also pollutes the air. Coal-fired heating adds to the problem.
Hebei and the neighboring cities of Beijing and Tianjin failed to meet air quality standards on about 220 days last year, 62 of which were severely polluted days. The annual density of the hazardous PM2.5 pollutants in the region reached an average of 93 micrograms per cubic meter last year. The nation’s safe limit is 75.
Just eight of China’s 74 major cities enjoyed good air last year with no days where the air failed to reach the nation’s standard.
They were Fuzhou, Haikou, Zhoushan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Huizhou, Kunming and Lhasa.
