Hebei resident first to sue authorities for failure to control pollution

THE first known case of a resident taking environmental officials to court to seek damages for pollution has struck a responsive chord among the public, according to the Yanzhao Metropolis Daily, based in the northern province of Hebei.

Shijiazhuang resident Li Guixin, believed to be the first person in China to ask for compensation from a local environmental bureau, is seeking 10,000 yuan (US$1,636) for the negative effects of pollution on his life.

Li’s lawsuit against the Shijiazhuang City Environmental Protection Bureau in Hebei, filed on Thursday, also asks the authority to find better ways to deal with the air pollution.

The newspaper said the idea has found support among netizens and people on the street, especially with most major cities plagued by pollution that regularly reaches dangerous levels.

The Yuhua District People’s Court will make a decision whether to accept the case within seven workdays, the newspaper reported.

However, it said Li’s case is awakening people’s awareness of ways to protect their rights and has become a way to urge authorities to improve their work, the paper said.
