Helicopter pilots escape death in Antarctic crash
TWO pilots miraculously survived after the Chinese helicopter called Xueying, or Snow Eagle, lost control and crashed into the Antarctic ice early this morning.
The helicopter suddenly spun out of control while it was returning to the icebreaker, Xuelong, after unloading goods at Zhongshan Station on the South Pole, China.com.cn quoted the Chinese Antarctic exploration team as saying today.
Failing to make an emergency landing, the pilots crashed into the ice at around 0:20am Beijing time. They were subsequently taken to the icebreaker for treatment. One suffered slight scratches, the report said.
The State Oceanic Administration has ordered the exploration team to suspend all activities, collect the helicopter wreckage and investigate the accident, according to the report.
The Snow Eagle helicopter was imported from Russia in December 2008 and joined the South Pole exploration mission from 2009. This was the third time that the helicopter has traveled to the South Pole to carry out scientific surveys, the report said.
