Helicopters help patrol temple fairs
BEIJING police have strengthened security at temple fairs for the holiday by introducing helicopter patrols for the first time.
More than 1.4 million people visited temple fairs in the city between Wednesday and Friday, the first three days of China's weeklong Spring Festival holiday, up 43 percent over the same period of last year, according to the Beijing Public Security Bureau.
Temple fairs are famous traditional Chinese New Year celebrations that include lion dances, stilt walking and old-fashioned snacks.
The temple fairs in Ditan and Longtan parks are the most popular in the city.
On Thursday, the first day of Chinese New Year, a record high of 235,000 people visited the temple fair in Ditan Park.
Police sources said the helicopters were mobilized to carry out surveillance from the air and assist ground controllers in making decisions to efficiently divert crowds when necessary.
