Help for homeless kids

TEN Chinese ministries, including the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Education, have started a nationwide program to help homeless children return to school.

This will require local authorities to seek education solutions meeting each homeless individual's needs and child custody situation, Ministry of Civil Affairs officials said at a Children's Day campaign in Beijing yesterday.

The ministries will also work to improve the system for monitoring cases of school drop-outs and provide help.

Vice Minister of Civil Affairs Dou Yupei said 273 child protection centers at county or district levels were established with funding from the ministry from 2010 to 2012.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs also announced that June 19 will be a national open house day for centers offering assistance to the urban homeless population, an activity it hopes will enhance public understanding of their work.

China has 2,031 centers providing aid for the urban homeless, according to Ministry of Civil Affairs data.
