Help for poor students

HIGH school students from poor families are being offered an average of 1,500 yuan (US$224) a year by the government to help with their studies.

The grants, which are available this autumn, are being set up by central and local governments and cover about 20 percent of current high school students throughout China, especially in rural, poor and ethnic minority areas.

About 10 percent of students in the eastern regions, 20 percent in the central areas and 30 percent in the west are eligible for the subsidies, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education.

Each student may receive between 1,000 and 3,000 yuan a year, depending on family circumstances and the area living costs.

In addition, the ministries are urging high schools to spend part of their budgets funding tuition-waiver schemes, scholarships and subsidies to aid students from poorer families.

Preferential policies will be made to encourage corporations, individuals and social groups to set up high school scholarships through donations, the government statement said.
