Hemorrhagic fever claims dozen lives in Qingdao

HEMORRHAGIC fever (EHF) has infected more than 140 people in the port city of Qingdao in Shandong Province and caused about a dozen deaths so far this year, China National Radio reported today.

The hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is transmitted by rodents and can cause fever, headache, backache, throat and chest inflammation, vomit and hemorrhage. The symptom is similar to that of cold and prone to mislead doctors.

Jiang Fachun, director with the city's Disease Control Center, said the virus is not spread among people. Patients get infected through contact with rats or food contaminated by rats. The disease affects mostly the rural population.

Jiang advised people to have a vaccination against the virus.
