Hemorrhagic fever strikes Qingdao, over 10 dead, 140-plus sick
MORE than 10 people in Qingdao, eastern Shandong Province, have died from the epidemic hemorrhagic fever this year and over 140 have been infected.
The outbreak of the contagious disease which is mainly spread by rats occurred in the city's rural outskirts. Although winter and spring are the high seasons for its spread, this year has seen a spike in hemorrhagic fever cases, Shandong TV reported today.
The vaccine for the disease has run out of stock, the Qingdao Center for Disease Control and Prevention told the television.
Symptoms of hemorrhagic fever include high fever, headache, pain in the waist, and bleeding. The disease could lead to kidney failure and is life-threatening.
Medical experts remind people to wash hands frequently, stay away from rats and not to eat food or drink water contaminated by rat droppings.
The hemorrhagic fever virus, however, is not spread among humans.
