Henan Province gets new government leader

DEPUTIES to the second meeting of 11th Henan Provincial People's Congress elected Guo Gengmao as governor today.

Guo, 58 and a native of Jizhou, Hebei Province, began his political career serving as a deputy Party secretary of a people's commune in Jixian, a county in Hebei, in November 1975.

Before being transferred to Henan, a province to the south of Hebei, to be deputy secretary of Henan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, last March, Guo kept rising in the ranks solely inside Hebei. He was governor of Hebei from January 2007 to March 2008.

Until today's election, Guo had been acting governor of Henan for nine months apart from being deputy secretary of Henan Provincial CPC Committee.

Henan has a population of 98 million and is the most populous region in the country.
