Henan villagers said they complained for years about man detained in 3 deaths

A SUSPECT has been detained in three homicides in central China’s Henan Province after villagers said he had violently attacked seven people over two years but police had failed to act.

At the same time, local police are being investigated to see if they failed to protect the villagers, Beijing Times reported today.

Zhu Kaizhi, 37, is accused of killing three people over 50 years old in Xinyang city on March 6, using a spade to bash at least two of them to death, the report said.

Villagers in Pingqiao District blamed local police for not controlling Zhu Kaizhi’s acts despite their complaints that he had acted violently over two years. They said police told them that they couldn’t do anything because Zhu had mental problems, the Times reported.

On March 6, Zhu is accused of rushing out of his home carrying a spade when 51-year-old Li Yuanyin passed by on a motorcycle. He is accused of striking Li, who fell to the ground dead, the paper reported.

Zhu is accused of then going to the house of 65-year-old Hou Kaizhen, who was busy in her yard. Zhu is suspected of killing her and dragging her body to a room, the paper reported.

Zhu then went to Li’s home, where he was reported to have smashed Li’s wife, 51-year-old Gan Xin’e, to death with his spade.

Zhu returned to his home and didn’t try to put up a fight when police handcuffed him. He was heard saying: “You don’t need to handcuff me. Please just beat me to death here,” the report said.

Zhu’s father said Zhu had a girlfriend when he was 24 but they broke up and soon thereafter Zhu became an extreme introvert, the report said. In 2010, he was diagnosed with mental illness and started taking medications to stay in control, the paper reported.
