Henan's population to top 100 million

CENTRAL China's Henan Province expects its population to top 100 million this month, the first Chinese province to beat that number, today's Orient Today newspaper reported.

The population accounts for 1/13 of the country's total.

Thanks to the country's "One-Child" policy, Henan's population growth has slowed down, with the 100th million resident born 13 years later than would normally have been the case, population officials told the newspaper.

The policy has delayed natural growth by about 33 million people in that time, they said.

Henan will continue to limit the population within 101 million this year and 107 million by 2020.

Nationwide, China will hold its sixth census on November 1 at a cost from 8 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) to 10 billion yuan.

Such a census is held every 10 years. The last one in 2000 put the count at more than 1.29 billion.
