Hepatitis C spreads due to improper diagnosis
IMPROPER diagnosis and treatment of patients in clinics in Guangdong Province have led to hepatitis C infections, according to the province's health department.
According to local media reports late last month, residents in Zijin County said more than 200 people had become infected with hepatitis C, causing chronic liver disease.
Residents said they suspected medical malpractice was responsible for the infections.
On February 24, Guangdong Health Department organized a group of experts to investigate. They found the cases had been identified since 2009, and an increasing number of cases had been diagnosed because more residents in the county had recently been tested.
The number of infected people in Zijin was 123 as of February 28, the county government confirmed on Friday night.
According to the investigation, the hepatitis C cases were linked to improper diagnosis and treatment, mother to child transmission, as well as through sexual contact.
Hepatitis C is viral and mainly transmitted through infected blood.
