Heroes hailed for saving students

CHINESE people are hailing the heroism of the ordinary citizens who likely prevented more children's lives from being lost after a man stabbed eight children to death last Tuesday in Fujian Province.

The killer also wounded five others, four of whom are now in stable condition. The fifth regained consciousness on Friday.

Many condolence messages have been posted on Websites such as Sina.com.

A man with a purple helmet was the first to challenge the killer and he has been singled out for special praise.

Ying Changyu, 34, was eating breakfast nearby after taking his daughter to Nanping Experimental Primary School last Tuesday when someone shouted "help!"

Ying rushed to the school gate and was shocked by the blood on the ground.

"I saw several small bodies lying in the blood. About 3 meters away from the bodies stood a man with a knife dripping with blood. A child was falling down by his side," Ying said.

Ying took off his helmet and hit the alleged killer, Zheng Minsheng, with it, shouting, "Are you a human being? Why did you kill these kids?"

The distraction likely saved other children.

At the same time, a female sanitation worker surnamed Liu waved her broom at the killer and protected three children with her body.

Another man named Gan Guiping appeared with a mop and joined Ying to save the children. Gan is the deputy director of the school's academic office and a physical education teacher there.

More people arrived, including You Qinzhang, a municipal urban construction management supervision team official, and the school's guard, Chen Shiyin. They all surrounded the killer.

"Drop the knife!" shouted Gan as You rushed the killer and grabbed his hands.

Other people called the police and ambulances.

A driver named Ye Yongliang rushed to the scene and carried some of the victims to cars so they could be taken to hospital.

The mother of Wu Yuxuan, who was wounded in the attack, said she wanted to thank the heroes.

"Without them, I might have lost my daughter," she said. Her daughter is now in stable condition.
