Hershey’s milk destroyed for containing banned additives

About 4,500 kilograms of Hershey's milk imported from the United States has been destroyed by customs authorities in Guangdong Province for containing an artificial sweetener and coloring agent banned in milk products on the Chinese mainland.

The strawberry and white chocolate flavored milk carries the Hershey brand but is made under license by Gossner Foods Inc. It was imported by a trade company in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China.

Both flavors of milk contained the artificial sweetener steviol glycoside and Allura Red AC, a coloring agent.

The ingredients are banned in milk products but allowed in limited amounts in other foods in China. Some studies have shown the additives can increase the risk of hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder in children.
