Hershey’s milk fails quality test
ABOUT 4,500 kilograms of Hershey’s milk imported from the United States has been destroyed by customs authorities in Guangdong Province for containing an artificial sweetener and coloring agent banned on the Chinese mainland.
The strawberry and white chocolate flavored milk carries the Hershey brand but is made under license by Gossner Foods Inc and imported by a company in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province.
Officials said the artificial sweetener steviol glycoside and Allura Red AC, a coloring agent, were banned in milk products but allowed in limited amounts in other foods in China. Some studies had shown they can increase the risk of hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder in children.
The milk was among 150 imported food and cosmetics items returned or destroyed for quality problems in June.
Problems with products ranged from labeling to excess bacteria and affected cleaning foam from South Korea and Gucci perfume from France.
