High cop tied to killing

POLICE in northeast China detained a former commissar for harboring the suspected killer of a deputy police chief, bolstering rumors that the commissar hired the murderer to end a dispute inside the police department.

Chen Jing, the former commissar of the police department in Tongjiang City, Heilongjiang Province, was detained for trying to shield Liu Xiangjun, who allegedly shot the city's deputy police chief Sun Wei in the head on March 28, Tongjiang police said in a press conference late Wednesday.

After being arrested on March 31, Liu claimed that he had a deep relation with Chen Jing and that his buddy Chen would look after him, according to the police.

The Beijing Times quoted an unnamed officer saying Chen held a grudge against Sun because he was sacked after Sun reported his gambling habit to higher authorities. The officer said Sun was going to assume Chen's office. But the police spokesman said there was no direct evidence to prove Chen hired Liu to kill Sun.

The alleged killer Liu was not even acquainted with the victim. However, Tongjiang Police said Liu hated police because he was jailed three years for burglary in 1986, and was detained several times for street fights, drug taking, and holding explosives afterwards.

The police also cited Liu's confession saying he was on drugs when he put a bullet in Sun's head with a shotgun.
