High hopes for China’s ‘English’ movie
China’s first English-language 3D sci-fi action adventure film, “Lost in the Pacific,” is aiming for a worldwide release at the end of 2015, according to its makers.
Starring Brandon Routh, of “Superman Returns” fame, and Chinese actress Zhang Yuqi, the film is set in 2020 when a group of elite international passengers embark on an inaugural transoceanic flight that later becomes involved in catastrophe.
Filmed at Malaysia’s Pinewood Studios, “Lost in the Pacific” is having visual effects added by UFO Internationals. Sound editing is being supervised by Oscar-nominated Kami Asgar and Sean McCormack while Oscar-winning Mark Paterson is doing the final sound mixing.
Arclight Films is handling the film’s rights outside China. It started the first round of sales in May at the Cannes Film Festival and has already secured seven pre-order theatrical release deals in Asia.
It could be the first Chinese independent sci-fi film to have a same-day release worldwide if it gets picked up by distributors in the United States.
A worldwide release plan is ambitious for any Chinese film, but Arclight has confidence in the movie.
It said it was unique “due to its international casting, storytelling and the quality of production.”
Director Vincent Zhou said: “It will be an extraordinary visual and acoustical experience with a unique adventure story for the global audience without language barriers.”
Arclight is planning to promote the film at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and the American Film Market in November.
