High-stake bet on World Heritage listing

SEVERAL Chinese locales are spending millions of yuan in rivalry to win a spot on the coveted UNESCO World Heritage List, hoping their unique sites would turn into a cash cow overnight.

The latest endeavor was Nanyue Temple in central China's Hunan Province. The local authority had already raised its ticket price from 40 yuan to 50 yuan to fill a budget gap caused by repair works.

The repair was ordered to prepare Nanyue Temple for the recognition by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for world heritage listing. A toilet in the temple alone cost 1.97 million yuan to build, China Youth Daily reported today.

An official in Hengyang City, where the temple is located, said the 1.97 million yuan was not a lot of money as the toilet was built according to the five-star standard.

The fever to bid for a place on the UNESCO list was spreading since the beginning of the month when the World Heritage Committee put six Danxia Landform areas in six provinces on the list.
