Hikers told to pay for rescue effort

THE Sichuan Mountain Climbing Association yesterday asked nine hikers who were missing for 13 days before turning up safely on Wednesday to pay a total of 4,100 yuan (US$642) - a fine of 500 yuan and 3,600 yuan to cover part of the rescue costs.

The association earlier in the day said the hikers would have to pay 30,000 yuan toward the cost of the rescue operation.

Gao Min, deputy secretary of the association, said the government will now pick up the remaining 26,000 yuan of rescue costs.

Nine hikers, including three Shanghai people, a guide and four bearers went into a prohibited area in the Siguniang Mountain area on September 30.

After being missing for 13 days, on Wednesday, they emerged safe, and all appeared to be in good condition.

They have now been banned from the Siguniang Mountain area for three years.

Earlier, when the higher expenses sum was demanded, the group and their families - who were yesterday in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan - said they would pay reasonable fees, but required a breakdown of expenses.

Some of the group are set to leave Chengdu today.
