Hit-and-run culprits deter chasers with gun

A sports utility vehicle rammed into a taxi and killed all the three people in the taxi in Yunnan Province on Saturday, but the SUV driver and two other men in his vehicle fled the scene and threatened chasing motorists with a gun.

Yunnan Police said they had identified the driver and five other people in his SUV, but the claim of a gun threat remained to be confirmed, China News Service reported today.

Police said the accident happened around 12:50am on Saturday in Zhaotong City. The SUV hit the taxi with such a force that the taxi literally flew off for several meters and damaged guardrail and trees on the roadside. The taxi driver and two passengers were killed instantly.

A witness said there were three men and three women in the SUV. The three women left the scene immediately with a taxi; the three men drove off in their SUV.
Some drivers on the road saw the accident and started to chase the SUV, but one man in the vehicle craned out and pointed a gun at chasing cars, forcing them to stop.

Police eventually found the SUV abandoned in a parking lot 2 kilometers away from the scene of the accident but the driver and other riders had already escaped. Police investigation is still under way.
