Hit-and-run driver arrested in deaths of 4 workers
A hit-and-run driver has been arrested for killing four road maintenance workers in a tunnel in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday, police said.
The 30-year-old man surnamed Fang was driving a sedan with a fake military plate and allegedly under the influence of alcohol, said Guangzhou police who are still investigating the case.
"The car must be driving at a speed of at least 100km per hour when it knocked out the barriers and signs and hit the four workers," a victim's relative told the local Yangcheng Evening News.
The accident happened at about 2:15am on Sunday inside the Huangpu Avenue Tunnel. Fang's Toyota sedan crashed into a construction vehicle and knocked out the four workers.
"After the crash, the driver, about 190 centimeters tall, got out of the car, grabbed another guy in the front seat and left the scene," a witness told the newspaper. "There was a strong smell of alcohol from him."
One worker died on the spot and the other three were pronounced dead when they were rushed to the hospital, police said.
They were all migrant workers from other provinces.
