Hit-and-run driver holds wife and daughter hostage

A man in southwest Yunnan Province held his wife and daughter hostage on May 27 to avoid arrest for his hit-and-run crime and was captured a hour later with both hostages safe, a local newspaper reported today.

After crashing with a car in Chuxiong prefecture at 2pm that day, Zhang Gang didn't stop and sped away. Patrol police soon intercepted his car and asked him to come out. But Zhang suddenly pulled out a 40cm-long knife and held his wife and three-year-old daughter hostage and told the police to back off or he would kill them.

A SWAT team was called in and snipers took up positions around his car. Zhang grew increasingly agitated and even stabbed his thigh to show his determination.

At about 3:30pm, Zhang released his wife but still held his daughter and even pointed the knife at her. At 4:31pm, the police decided to take action. Some officers moved furtively to the car, suddenly pulled open the door, grabbed the knife from Zhang, and pulled him out of the car. The assault took only four seconds.
