Hit-and-run driver uses pregnant girlfriend to evade law
A hit-and-run driver in Shandong Province asked his pregnant fiancée to be the scapegoat for his criminal offense, the local Qilu Evening Post reported today.
The driver surnamed Xu allegedly hit a motorcyclist in Shanghe County on the night of June 1. He didn't stop the car and dragged the victim for more than 80 meters, according to some witnesses. The victim died immediately.
Police found the car belonged to Xu, but his family said Xu was away from home. On June 5, Xu's fiancée surnamed Zhao surrendered to the police, claiming she hit the victim and fled the scene. But Xu's absence made the police suspicious.
Eventually, Zhao admitted to the police that Xu asked her to act as the scapegoat because she was pregnant. The next day Xu turned himself in to the police.
Xu told the police that he was very frightened after the accident and persuaded Zhao to assume the responsibility because he learned that China's Criminal Law exempts pregnant women and nursing mothers from imprisonment.
