Hit-and-run man gets life after 11 years on the lam

A DRIVER who knocked down an old man with his car in Beijing and abandoned him in the neighboring Hebei Province to cover up his crime 11 years ago was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
Zhang Xiangui accidentally hit the 71-year-old man surnamed Wang on January 24, 2001. Zhang and his father-in-law took the unconscious Wang and abandoned him in woods in Zhuozhou City in Hebei, leaving him to die, Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said.
Zhang's father-in-law surrendered to police after the accident was exposed and was sentenced to 14 years behind bars for murder. Zhang was captured in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, last September, more than 10 year's after his fleeing, Beijing Times reported Thursday.
Zhang argued at the court that he thought the old man had died in the traffic accident. For fear of serving jail terms, he abandoned the body.
However, autopsy report showed Wang only suffered bruises from the traffic accident. He died of starvation and exposure.
Zhang was also ordered to compensate Wang's family 320,000 yuan (US$50,729).
