Homegrown H1N1 vaccine in testing phase

LABORATORY tests began yesterday on China's first domestically developed vaccine for swine flu.

The medicines are expected to hit the market in September after safety tests and clinical trials, said Fan Bei, deputy general manager of Hualan Biological Engineering Inc, based in Henan Province.

The company produced a first batch of 90,000 doses and will be able to make 600,000 doses a day when it receives final approval, Fan said.

A clinical test plan submitted by the firm has been approved by the State Food and Drug Administration.

The company received the seed virus from a World Health Organization lab on June 3, according to earlier reports.

China has 11 drug firms that are qualified to produce flu vaccines.

Another drug company, Sinovac Biotech Co Ltd, announced that it had started development of H1N1 flu vaccines on June 15.

Officials from Shanghai Institute of Biological Products told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the production of a locally made swine flu vaccine was running smoothly.

They said it still takes several weeks to complete initial production, which will be followed by clinical tests to be arranged by the State Food and Drug Administration.
