Homegrown jet will fly in 2014

CHINA'S first homegrown jumbo jet, the C919, will take off in 2014 after rolling off the assembly line near the end of 2013 or the first half of 2014, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China said yesterday.

The jumbo jet is scheduled to be put into commercial service in 2016, said Wu Guanghui, vice general manager of COMAC and the jumbo jet's chief designer.

The aircraft company said earlier it had taken its first 100 orders for the C919 from six companies. These firms include Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines.

Wu forecast C919 sales would reach 2,000 by 2030, compared with an estimated global demand of 20,000 passenger planes, said Wu.

"We must ensure both technological and commercial success of the C919," said Wu, adding it was more difficult to sell the jets than it is to make them.

"The key is whether passengers will like our jets. We took this into consideration during the design phase and I'm confident we will not disappoint the market," he said.
