Homeless helper held in child abuse case

A man who founded a shelter for the homeless and received civilian awards for humanitarian work in a southern China city has been detained on suspicion of molesting a child.

Zhang Haiwen, 56, who is well known in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, for helping the poor and homeless, is accused of molesting a nine-year-old girl who stayed at his shelter, local news portal Southcn.com reported yesterday.

Police found the girl wandering the streets, but when they suggested sending her to the shelter, she became agitated and insisted she would not go there.

She told police she had once stayed in the shelter for 10 days, during which time Zhang molested her several times. It is not known whether there are other victims.

Zhang was one of the Top 10 Charity Ambassadors of Shenzhen in 2003 and won the Civilian Citizen and Moral Model awards in 2007.

He has provided free accommodation for thousands of homeless people and helped them find jobs since 1999.
