Homemade soup kills 4
A POT of stewed chicken with wild mushrooms claimed four lives in Hongya County, Sichuan Province, county authorities said yesterday.
Li Dingkun, 40, picked some wild mushrooms from a fir tree on a nearby mountain on November 19. He and his neighbor Zhu Dengmin made a soup out of the mushrooms and a chicken that their families ate that evening, said a spokesman for Hongya's publicity department.
The five people who ate the soup soon started to experience vomiting and diarrhea, but they were not sent to hospital by other villagers until they began to lose consciousness the next day, the spokesman said.
Li's wife Wang Dingying died last Tuesday and Zhu's wife He Yuzhi died the next day. Li died on Saturday and Zhu's four-year-old grandson died on Sunday, the spokesman added.
Zhu is in stable condition.
A family of three died several years ago after eating the same kind of mushroom in the village.
