Hong Kong aiming to win visitors back

The decline in tourist numbers in Hong Kong over the summer has prompted moves to win visitors back.

The number of overnight visitors slid almost 4 percent in the first six months compared to last year, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Major attractions, including Disneyland, saw visitor numbers drop by 10 percent over the summer months.

Vivian Lee Ling-fung, a director at the city’s Ocean Park attraction attributed the downturn to economic woes in neighboring regions together with the devaluation of the yuan.

Ocean Park saw a 15 percent decline in summer visitors, with the number of tourists from the Chinese mainland dropping the most.

Ocean Park is launching new promotions to attract visitors from emerging markets. Its “Halloween Bash” next month is expected to draw about a million visitors.

Hong Kong Disneyland, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, said that it was about to present visitors with brand new attractions.

An “Iron Man Experience” is to open next year as part of a new Marvel-themed area.

Legislative Council member Yiu Si-wing said: “There will be many large scale attractions in the future, such as Kai Tak Development area in Kowloon City will turn into Kai Tak Fantasy, a recreational place, while outlying island Lantau can become a tourism island upon completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai- Macau Bridge.”
