Hong Kong returns to normal after rain

PUBLIC services in Hong Kong gradually got back to normal yesterday as Typhoon Merbok, which had triggered a No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal warning, moved away.

The Hong Kong Observatory downgraded its warning for Merbok from No. 8 Southwest Gale or Storm Signal to No. 3 Strong Wind Signal at 4:40am yesterday, and canceled the warning at 11:10am.

The observatory said rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters had been recorded in many parts of Hong Kong since midnight. An Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal was issued early yesterday, and was upgraded to a Red Rainstorm Warning Signal in the morning. The warning was canceled shortly after noon.

According to information released by the Hong Kong government, 10 people sought medical treatment at public hospitals, and 239 people sought refuge at the Home Affairs Department’s temporary shelters during the storm.

There had been 20 reports of fallen trees.

Because of the storm warning, classes at some schools and kindergartens in the city were suspended. Cable car riding at tourism hotspot Ngong Ping 360 was also suspended.

After the cancellation of storm warning, public transport began to resume normal services.

The airport authority said that, as of noon yesterday, the number of canceled and delayed flights had reduced to 17 and 181 respectively.

The Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan and the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui reopened yesterday morning, the marine department announced.

It also said it had received notification from the Hong Kong Pilots Association Ltd that the pilotage service partially resumed from 4pm and would fully resume when weather conditions improve.

The observatory said Merbok was moving across southeast China and would dissipate gradually, while Hong Kong will still see showers and thunderstorms over the next two days.
