Honored for big hearts

A TOTAL of 133 domestic businessmen who gave 3.44 billion yuan (US$504 million) in donations last year were named China's most generous philanthropists of 2010 in Beijing yesterday.
Three among this year's top 10 philanthropists were from the real estate sector, including Century Golden Resources Group Chairman Huang Rulun. Huang ranked highest for giving nearly 270 million yuan in 2009 amid his total gifts of nearly 1 billion yuan over years, reported China Philanthropy Times.
Education and disaster relief were the philanthropists' favorite domains, especially for Chen Guangbiao, chairman of the Jiangsu Huangpu Renewable Resources Utilization Co Ltd, the most generous among them.
Before the April 14 earthquake in Qinghai's Yushu prefecture, Chen had given locals a total of 46 primary schools since 2006. He equipped them with 1,500 computers, 30,000 uniforms and 8,000 school bags.
After the quake, he bought and transported more than 20 heavy rescue tools in Qinghai's capital, Xining. He dispatched a team of rescuers who pulled 11 survivors from the rubble.
