Hopes fade for leukemia boy

A COUPLE in northeastern China are losing hope in saving their leukemia-stricken son after their younger daughter, who was born to save her brother, was also diagnosed with the fatal disease.

The two-year-old girl nicknamed "Er Bao" has gone through a series of chemotherapy and is now waiting in a Beijing hospital for the latest results to see whether leukemia has invaded her brain.

Meanwhile, her 11-year-old brother nicknamed "Da Bao", who was overwhelmed by his sister's sickness and developed serious lung infection in September, is also being treated in another ward at the hospital, reported today's Beijing News.

The parents, Zhang Wei and Zheng Xinying from Liaoning Province, had the girl in September 2008 in a desperate hope that perfectly matching stem cells from her umbilical cord could be used to double the survival chances of their son, who was diagnosed with leukemia when he was six.
