Hospital chief expelled

A PARTY chief of a children's hospital in central China's Hunan Province has been kicked out of Party for purchasing industrial oxygen for medical use.

Li Xilian, former Party secretary of the Chenzhou City Children's Hospital, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Health announced on its Website yesterday. Li also had her administrative rank downgraded, according to the Website.

The hospital purchased nearly 50,000 cylinders of industrial oxygen from a manufacturer owned by Li's husband Chen Heping.

The substandard oxygen had triggered a wave of serious child illnesses.

Chen is under police investigation as his company was not licensed to produce medical oxygen, which must be at least 99.5 percent pure, according to an earlier report.

Meanwhile, a hospital staffer in charge of oxygen received a warning and was removed from his post for failing to stop the illegal use.

Industrial oxygen sells for 7 yuan (US$1) per 40-liter bottle, compared to 30 yuan for medical oxygen. The carbon dioxide and acetylene found in industrial oxygen can damage the respiratory system and cause lung infections.
