Hospital critcised over dead mother

A HOSPITAL in east An?hui Province was under fire for refusing to save a woman who regained consciousness one hour after being declared dead during labour despite her husband's emotional pleading.

Authorities at Ping'an Hospital in Hanshan County finally offered the husband Tang Zezhi 310,000 yuan (US$ 46,487) as compensation for losing his 29-year-old wife Pei Chuanqin after he signed a contract to give up his rights to demand further investigation or money, reported today's Workers Daily.

Tang, now left with his newborn daughter, said he was overwhelmed with regret for bringing his wife to the hospital, after being cheated by its advertising which boasted of elite medical personnel and all-round service.

Pei was admitted to the hospital on July 28, after the hospital director promised to bring a maternity expert from neighbouring Ganhu County to attend to her.

However, Pei was taken into a maternity ward after one hour, apparently without the presence of the expert. The doctors later informed Tang that Pei had died of heavy bleeding.

After about an hour, Tang saw Pei open her eyes, asking for help in a weak voice. Tang called immediately for doctors but they ignored his pleas.
