Hospital halts heart surgeries after 4 deaths
A hospital in south China's Shenzhen City has suspended all heart surgeries after four of the five heart operation patients died in the past month and an investigation is ongoing to find the causes.
The high death rate has shocked the Shenzhen People's Hospital because only two of its 70-plus heart surgery patients died last year and the hospital suspected that it was protamine sulfate, a medicine used in all the four failed surgeries that caused the deaths, the local Nanfang Daily reported today.
Protamine sulfate is extracted from the sperm of salmon and other dish and is used to help stop bleeding.
The preliminary investigation showed the medicine was normal and "had no direct link with the deaths." But a more sophisticated examination is under way, the report said.
Liu Ming, deputy director of the hospital, said the postoperative mortality might also be caused by cross-infection in the hospital and they are conducting a thorough check, the report said.
