Hospital in Henan sells placentas for money

POLICE in central China's Henan Province are investigating a hospital that allegedly sold human placentas to dealers who then sold them to restaurants and drug stores.

Two men were caught by police after they put two bags of placentas into a van at the gate of Tongxu People's Hospital in Kaifeng County on Monday.

The suspects, both surnamed Liu, said they had traded human placentas for years to meet rising demands as many Chinese regard placenta as a panacea for some maternity diseases and a recipe to slow down aging process.

They said they had bought fresh placentas from several maternity hospitals in Kaifeng and Zhoukou counties at 30 yuan (US$4.38) each and would sell at a higher price to traditional Chinese medicine stores and restaurants in Henan and Anhui provinces.

The Tongxu hospital authorities, however, denied selling any placenta to individuals for profit. They said placentas belonged to women who just gave birth and could only be used by licensed medical institutions for scientific research, according to China's law.
