Hospital staff exposed online for taking kickbacks
AUTHORITIES of six hospitals in Zhejiang Province are feeling the heat of public anger after an online post revealed the names of nearly 100 doctors and nurses who took kickbacks from a medicine company.
Most of the exposed are department chiefs or senior doctors in six Hangzhou hospitals. They have been paid allegedly 70 yuan (US$11) to 250 yuan (US$38) for prescribing each drug and medical device supplied by Hangzhou Tairui since February, according to the poster nicknamed CCTV9090, China News Service reported today.
The exposed doctors and nurses also received travel expenses and gifts, including digital cameras, in return for selecting the company's products, the post on an online forum, 9lou.com, said.
CCTV9090 said the list of names, job titles and commissions was found in a lost flash disc he picked up on a bus. But his post was deleted at 5pm yesterday.
Several netizens checked the authenticity of the listed names by calling the six hospitals and condemned the bad practice of these hospitals and the company.
Hangzhou Tairui denied the accusation. A sales manager surnamed Yu said it was a total slander as the medical terms mentioned in the post were unprofessional. "It's an attack from our rivals. We have gotten used to this," said Yu.
