Hospital staff flee fire, leaving patients behind
MEDICAL workers in a Shandong Province hospital abandoned their patients and fled the building that was on fire on September 16.
More than 60 patients and their relatives were left behind in smoke-filled wards of the Ji'ning City Maternity Hospital. Several women just delivered babies through cesarean section and couldn't walk, Shandong TV reported yesterday.
One patient said the fire broke out on the first floor and black smoke soon filled the corridors and rooms on the second and third floors. She took off the drip needle on her own because "the doctors and nurses just fled for their lives."
This is not the first time that hospital staff abandoned patients in the event of a fire. On August 24, a patient died on the operating table of a Shanghai hospital when medical staff fled a fire in the next room, leaving the 48-year-old man who was having a leg amputation unattended for 30 minutes.
