Hospital suspends 4 over death of boy
TWO senior officials and two others at a hospital in Jiangsu Province have been suspended after some 1,000 people voluntarily gathered to mourn the death of a five-year-old boy who reportedly died after receiving infusion.
Authorities at the Zhangjiagang No. 1 People's Hospital said yesterday that preliminary investigation showed that the mixture of two chemicals in the boy's infusion, namely metoclopramide hydrochloride and sodium bicarbonate, may have led to a sudden deterioration in his health, ensuing death on the night of November 28, according to China News Service.
But the hospital denied any wrongdoing in terms of medical practice of its doctors, saying the boy was properly received and treated. It also defended the use of the two chemicals, saying there was no prior record showing the mixture could lead to any problem, the agency said.
However, the hospital announced yesterday that it was suspending a vice chairman and the chief of department of pediatrics. A pediatrician and a pharmacist who treated the boy were also suspended.
The boy, Xia Chengsen, was rushed to the hospital for continuous nausea at 9:30pm. A pediatrician named Wu Yan said the boy had caught a cold and prescribed a drip. However, Xia felt severe bellyache and lost consciousness during the infusion. He was later pronounced dead.
The boy's family and some 1,000 others, who knew of the death via Internet, gathered at the hospital to protest.
