Hostage taker killed by sniper

POLICE in east China's Jiangsu Province have shot dead a man who demanded 1 million yuan (US$146,505) for an 84-year-old woman he was taking hostage.

Song Donghan, 34, a native of Jiangxi Province, went into the woman's home on the 25th floor of a residential building in Nanjing at about 2pm disguised with a wig, facial mask and glasses, yesterday's Modern Express newspaper reported, citing police.

He put a knife to the neck of the woman, surnamed Li, and demanded the ransom from her daughter who went home at about 6pm.

A neighbor who passed their door called police.

The daughter pretended to call her husband to raise the money and told police the man had explosives strapped to his body.

Police evacuated residents from the building.

About 7pm, a policeman pretending to carry money was let in the apartment, distracting Song and helping a sniper to take aim.

The women were unhurt.
