Hostage traumatized by escaped prisoner

THREE prisoners captured three days after they broke out a north China jail have confessed that they had planned the escape for one year.

Qiao Haiqiang, Dong Jiaji, and Li Hongbing said they spent a long time in the workshop at Hohhot No. 2 Prison creating homemade knives, which they used to kill a prison guard during their escape last Saturday, reported today's Inner Mongolia Morning Post.

They will soon face court on at least five charges including killing a police officer, assaulting a policeman, taking a hostage, escaping prison and robbery, the report said.

Another escapee, Gao Bo, was holding a woman hostage when he was shot dead on Tuesday by police hunting him in Helin County, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The hostage surnamed Hou is still traumatized by the memory of being held by the prisoner when he was shot dead, the newspaper reported.

Her husband said she had hardly slept since. "She keeps screaming at night and avoids contact with everybody," said her husband surnamed Zhao. He plans to take her for a medical checkup in Hohhot City, the newspaper said.
