Hostage-taker gives up

A man who took his co-worker hostage at knifepoint at a factory in Yangzhou, a city in Jiangsu Province, handed himself over to police yesterday after the woman was safely rescued one hour earlier.

The suspect, surnamed Jiang, was described as a newcomer to the plant. Authorities said he might be suffering from a psychological disorder such as paranoia and became agitated after being swindled at the local railway station just after arriving in the city.

Jiang was the one who reported the incident to police. He and the coworker are believed to be from the same village in southwestern Sichuan Province.

The coworker, a 40-year-old woman whose name has not been released, is a kitchen worker at the Yangzhou No. 2 Power Plant and appeared uninjured after she was rescued at around 3pm, Yangzhou television reported.

After the woman was out of danger, Jiang remained locked inside the kitchen on the factory's second floor and threatened to commit suicide if police officers broke into the room.

But about an hour later, he walked out of the room and was escorted back to the police station, the report said.
