Hot and bothered students call off ‘naked run’ as university agrees to install air conditioners

A “streaking protest” planned by students from a Guangzhou University against poor cooling facilities in their dormitories has been cancelled because of safety concerns – but not before the university promised to install air conditioners, South China Morning Post reported.

Fed up with the intense summer heat, students at the South China Normal University’s Shipai campus had planned for the event to take place tonight in an effort to persuade school authorities to install better cooling facilities in their sleeping quarters, the New Express reported.

With only two fans in a six-person dormitory and temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, students have been complaining of being unable to sleep and having to take several showers to cool themselves at night, the report said.

Unwilling to put up with the heat any longer, an unidentified student proposed the streaking protest on Wechat several days ago, urging his peers to join him for a jog in the buff around the campus at 8pm to draw the school authorities’ attention to their plight.

Installation had already begun on one campus, the staff member has said, but the change would come slowly because some of the dormitory buildings did not have sufficient power circuits.
