Hotel demoted over arrests
THE Hilton hotel in southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality has lost its five-star rating because it was involved in a prostitution investigation, China's highest hotel rating authority said yesterday.
National Hotel Ratings Committee said the Hilton Chongqing Hotel had degraded the image of Chinese hotels.
The Hilton Chongqing was temporarily closed on June 20 when a police raid found a robust sex trade in the building's Diamond Dynasty Club. The Hilton resumed operation eight days later. The Diamond Dynasty Club in the basement is still suspended from operation and remains under police investigation.
This is the latest penalty for the luxury hotel, China News Service reported.
The Hilton Chongqing was temporarily shut down last month when a police raid arrested 102 suspects there on prostitution and drug charges.
Nearly 60 people, including the hotel's major shareholder, Peng Zhiming, were detained.
Peng, also the boss of Diamond Dynasty, used the Hilton to shelter prostitutes, police said. Peng was an adviser to the local government and a deputy to the local People's Congress.
According to an earlier report, Peng was suspected of connections with crime bosses. He has always kept a low profile and that's why he survived Chongqing's crackdown on criminal gangs, reports said.
Chongqing police gave him warnings but he refused to change. Officers said Peng gave the city's former police chief 300,000 yuan (US$44,260) in bribes in exchange for protection.
