PRESIDENT Hu Jintao has cut his Latin America trip short because of the quake.
Hu is in Brasilia for the summit of Brazil, Russia, India and China and a state visit to Brazil.
He postponed visits to Venezuela and Peru after the summit.
Hu held phone talks with Peruvian President Sebastian Pinera and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, informing them of the situation in China's earthquake-hit region. Hu told the leaders he had to return home as soon as possible.
Premier Wen Jiabao has also postponed a scheduled visit to Brunei, Indonesia and Myanmar on April 22-25.
