Hu: HK government will unite society

CHINESE President Hu Jintao said in Hong Kong yesterday that the new government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will be able to unite all sectors of society and lead them to turn the city into an international metropolis with "economic prosperity, political structural democracy and social harmony."

"With the strong support of the central government, the firm backing of the mainland and the good foundation that has been built over the past 15 years," the new HKSAR government led by Leung Chun-ying will have closer links with the mainland and more extensive connections with the world, Hu said, while addressing the welcoming dinner hosted by the HKSAR government.

Hu arrived Hong Kong Friday on a three-day trip for the 15th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China and the ceremony to inaugurate the fourth-term government of the HKSAR today.

Calling Hong Kong "a place where miracles happen," Hu said the spiritual strength that Hong Kong compatriots have forged over the years was behind the success of the world-renowned metropolis.

The fact that the city still faces increasingly fierce competition and daunting challenges "requires the Hong Kong people to carry forward this same spirit," the visiting president said.

In his speech broadcast live, Hu urged some 7 million Hong Kong people to stand together in the face of difficulties, work hard with tenacity and confidence and use their wisdom and diligence to build better lives.

Hu visited the site of Hong Kong's Kai Tak Development (KTD) project yesterday morning, where he was accompanied by outgoing Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen and other top officials.

Hu toured the Kai Tak cruise terminal under construction and viewed the models of the terminal and the Kowloon East development zone before heading to the nearby construction site of the Kai Tak public housing scheme to learn about its progress.

Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said he felt very pleased to visit Hong Kong after his last trip five years ago, and hoped to visit "as many places as possible."

The KTD project is one of the major infrastructure construction projects in the city, which is designed to meet the demand for boosting Hong Kong's economic development and improving the people's livelihood and environmental protection, he said.

"It is a very significant project," Hu said, stressing that the progress and quality of the project must be guaranteed, while greater attention should be given to workplace safety.
