Hu, Obama put ties first in crucial phone link-up

President Hu Jintao said yesterday that healthy and stable economic and trade relations between China and the United States served the interests of both countries.

He made the remarks during a phone conversation with US President Barack Obama.

As uncertainties still remained in global economic recovery, both China and the US faced the task of boosting stable development, Hu said.

He hoped both sides could settle trade disputes through dialogue and consultation.

Obama said his country understood the challenges that China was facing in its economic development, and both countries should continue to make efforts to address major concerns and achieve global economic recovery and balanced development.

Positive, cooperative and comprehensive relations between the US and China were vital for both countries and the world, Obama said.

Healthy relations served the strategic and long-term interests of both, he added.

Obama reaffirmed his country's adherence to the one-China policy, which it recognized as one of China's core interests.

The two countries shared broad and common interests in tackling global and regional challenges, Obama said. He expressed hope both sides would strengthen cooperation in this respect.

Hu said properly handling the Taiwan and Tibet issues, which concerned China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and represented China's core interests, was the key to Sino-US relations.

He also said China attached great importance to the issue of nuclear security, opposing nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism, and supporting international efforts to enhance cooperation on nuclear security.

Hu will attend the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit from April 12 to 13 in Washington DC.

Hu said China was ready to work closely with other parties to make the summit a success.

As two major powers in the world, China and the US faced common challenges and shared major responsibilities in many areas, including dealing with international and regional hot-button issues and maintaining world peace and security, Hu said.

China was ready to cooperate with the US to address differences and sensitive issues between the two nations, and strengthen dialogue and cooperation in all areas, the Chinese president said.
